ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays finally scored a run, and got a victory too. Desmond Jennings had a two-run single during a four-run fourth inning and the Rays snapped a club-record 31-inning scoring drought en route to beating the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 Wednesday night. "Outstanding," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "The guys needed that, and you could just see them relax immediately." Tampa Bay, which won for just the second time in 16 games, had been shut out in its previous three games. The Rays had scored 35 runs over the previous 15 games. "Its been so awkward to watch this other side of this whole thing," Maddon said. "Im not going to say were cured, but I definitely believe its a step in the right direction." Yadier Molina had two RBIs for the Cardinals, who entered with three consecutive shutout pitching performances. St. Louis pitchers had their streak of 30 scoreless innings end. The Rays big fourth inning came against Michael Wacha (4-5). Matt Joyce had an RBI single, with a second run scoring when centre fielder Peter Bourjos was charged with an error for misplaying the hit. After Wacha walked Yunel Escobar and Ryan Hanigan to load the bases, Jennings drove in two with a single. "Thats a great feeling to come through and really kick-start the party," Joyce said. Wacha allowed four runs, four hits and four walks in five innings. "He just never really found his fastball, for whatever reason," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "His timing was off and it was a fight for him." Wacha had given up three runs or less in 13 straight starts to begin the season, which was the longest season-opening stretch by a Cardinals pitcher since a 14-game run by Lee Meadows in 1917. Bourjos was robbed of an extra-base hit with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth when right fielder Kevin Kiermaier made a full-extension diving catch on a liner. "Kiermaier flying through the air, thats the play of the game," Maddon said. "Kiermaiers play was totally uplifting." Bourjos called it unbelievable. "Initially when it left the bat I didnt see anybody over there," Bourjos said. "But he covered a lot of ground." Tampa Bay extended its lead to 6-3 in the seventh on Evan Longorias RBI single and a sacrifice fly by James Loney. Molina hit a two-run third-inning single before Matt Carpenter put the Cardinals ahead 3-0 on a run-scoring single in the fourth. Rays starter Erik Bedard lasted just four innings, giving up three runs and eight hits. The left-hander entered with the best ERA (2.51) all-time in interleague play with at least 25 starts. Juan Carlos Oviedo (2-2) went 1 1-3 innings for the win. Grant Balfour threw the final 2 1-3 innings for his 10th save. NOTES: The Cardinals are optimistic that ace Adam Wainwrights right elbow discomfort is not a serious issue. He returned to St. Louis for tests . ... Former St. Louis manager and Tampa native Tony La Russa threw the ceremonial first pitch. He will be inducted into baseballs Hall of Fame on July 27. ... Tampa Bay RHP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) will make his second rehab start Thursday for Triple-A Durham. He could rejoin the rotation at the end of the month. ... Maddon was given the neon back entrance sign from Derby Lane track that he drove by daily en route to the ballpark. The track was a favourite spot of Rays senior adviser Don Zimmer, who died last week at 83. "My head is spinning right now," said Maddon, when he first saw the sign outside the clubhouse. ... The Cardinals signed high school pitcher Ronnie Williams, their 2014 second-round draft pick. Nick Vigil Jersey . About seven hours before facing Washington in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference second round series, team officials said the oft-injured Bynum would miss the rest of the playoffs and would not even be with the team for the rest of the post-season. Pat Sims Jersey . Kadri was dressed in a green jersey at Thursdays practice and skated as an extra forward on the teams fourth line as the Leafs. 1 overall pick in the draft by the Houston Texans, is recovering from sports hernia surgery. Anthony Munoz Jersey .com) - The Columbus Blue Jackets rewarded starting goaltender and pending restricted free agent Sergei Bobrovsky with a four-year contract extension on Friday. Tyler Eifert Jersey . The third baseman whipped the ball across the diamond to second baseman Aaron Hill. He quickly tossed it to shortstop Chris Owings, who flipped over his shoulder to left fielder Cody Ross.Phil Mickelson will look to put the heartache of missing out on a second Open title behind him at the US PGA Championship at Baltusrol this week. Mickelson carded a flawless 65 in the final round at Royal Troon to finish 17 under par, a total which would have won or forced a play-off in 141 of the 145 Open Championships staged to date. However, the 46-year-old was denied a sixth major title by a stunning performance from playing partner Henrik Stenson, whose closing 63 equalled the lowest score recorded in any major - Mickelson having done so as well in the first round - and gave him a winning total of 264, the lowest in major history. Fortunately for Mickelson, golfs return to the Olympics for the first time since 1904 has resulted in a compressed schedule with just one week between The Open and US PGA Championship, which the left-hander won the last time it was staged at Baltusrol in 2005. Mickelson shot a 65 in the final round The Open - but lost out to Henrik Stenson That was really a fun week, Mickelson said. That was something I cherish.Ive gone back there a number of times, they were nice enough to give me a membership and the head pro there Doug Steffen and I became very good friends and we go back and relive that final round and those moments. It was a Monday finish, which was rare, but certainly special.Mickelson was facing a par putt on the 14th when the final round was suspended due to a thunderstorm, leaving Tiger Woods as the leader in the clubhouse and 12 players to return to Baltusrol on Monday morning. After holing out on the 14th, Mickelson also parred the next before a bogey on the 16th dropped him back into a tie for the lead with Australian Steve Elkington and Denmarks Thomas Bjorn. Both players were unable to birdie the par-five 18th and that left Mickelson needing to get up and down from short of the green for his own birdie to add the US PGA title to his maiden major triumph in the 2004 Masters. It really wasnt that hard of a shot because the lie was okay and there was a bit of a hollow so the shorter I hit it the ball was going to chase and the further I hit it the ball was going to slow down, Mickelson added.I felt like I had a pretty goood margin of error and hit it to about three feet.dddddddddddd It was a good feeling. That was an important one because I always felt like once I won one major I was going to win multiple times. I needed to get that second one and got it fairly soon, a year and a half later. Flashback: Jasons dream Day We look back at Jason Days record-breaking 2015 win at Whistling Straits. Mickelson has been paired with defending champion Jason Day and two-time winner Rory McIlroy for the first two rounds, while the tradition of having the winners of the years first three majors - Danny Willett, Dustin Johnson and Stenson - in the same group has been maintained.Masters champion Willett warmed up for the final major of the year by throwing the first pitch at a New York Yankees game on Sunday and hopes the set up at Baltusrol will help him rediscover his top form. Danny Willett will be keen to recapture his Masters winning form in New Jersey Out of all the majors the US PGA is usually the fairest because the weather doesnt usually play a massive factor, said Willett, who snapped his Masters-winning putter in frustration during the US Open and finished 53rd in The Open. Its a good time of year, the weather is pretty good and the golf course set up isnt ridiculously penal like a US Open. The scoring is usually pretty decent so its more like a regular PGA Tour event and thats why you see a lot of guys who predominantly play over there compete in them.It will be nice to get a bit of sun on your back and get out of swinging it like youre in 30mph winds off your back foot!Watch the PGA Championship throughout the week live on Sky Sports 4 - your home of golf.
