( - The Detroit Red Wings hope to rebound from a loss and win for the eighth time in 10 outings when they host the Florida Panthers in Fridays clash at Joe Louis Arena. Detroit boasts a 7-1-1 record over its last nine games, but is coming off Wednesdays shootout loss against visiting Toronto. The 2-1 setback snapped the clubs winning streak at three games, but the point gained put the Red Wings in sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division. The Red Wings have since fallen one point behind Tampa Bay for the divisions top spot after the Lightning beat Carolina on Thursday. Detroit could once again overtake the idle Bolts with a win tonight. Detroit led the Maple Leafs 1-0 after Gustav Nyquist scored late in the second period, but that would be all the offense the Wings could muster against Torontos James Reimer, who stopped 41 shots for the visitors. Phil Kessel evened the score at 5:09 of the second period and Mike Santorelli tallied the winning goal in the shootout. With the final attempt, Santorelli skated in on net and buried a wrister between the pads of Jimmy Howard for the victory. Howard finished the game with 18 stops through regulation and overtime, but his team fell to 1-4 this season in shootouts. Detroit head coach Mike Babcock was pleased with his teams effort despite the end result. The Red Wings dominated play for much of Wednesdays game, outshooting the Leafs 42-19 for the game and 18-6 in the third period alone. I thought we played good, Babcock said. We got a point. They stole two points but Ill take it every night. If you play like that youre going to win. Despite the loss, Detroit still boasts a 11-3-3 record on home ice this season. Howard will start tonight and he is 2-1-1 with a 1.95 goals against average in four career games against Florida. Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser will miss tonights game with an upper- body injury and he also is expected to sit out Saturdays game in Toronto. Justin Abdelkader has missed the last five games with a bruised left shoulder and is questionable for tonight. Florida has lost three of five games in December after ending last month on a two-game winning streak. The Panthers hope to get back on track against the Red Wings, as Florida enters Fridays battle having won two of three and four of the last six meetings with Detroit. Florida also has taken three in a row in the Motor City and boasts a 4-0-1 mark in its last five trips to Joe Louis Arena. Florida opened a three-game road trip Monday in St. Louis and fell to 5-4-5 as the guest after a 4-2 setback. The Panthers tied the score at 2-2 on an Aaron Ekblad goal early in the third period, but Chris Porter delivered the game- winner for the Blues with 1:54 remaining in regulation. Paul Stastny added an empty-net tally to seal the victory for the home team. Ekblad, a leading candidate for the NHLs Calder Trophy, is pacing all rookie defensemen in goals (5) and assists (13) this season. Nick Bjugstad also scored for Florida, which received 24 stops from Roberto Luongo in defeat. Disappointed to lose the way we lost at the end, but I thought we battled hard and competed hard with a really good club, Panthers head coach Gerard Gallant said. Luongo is expected to start tonight for Florida. He owns a 12-13-5 record and a 2.88 GAA in 31 career games against the Red Wings. The Panthers could get Scottie Upshall back in the lineup tonight. The forward has missed the last seven games due to an ankle injury, but Upshall practiced on Thursday and is questionable for tonight. Fellow forward Aleksander Barkov, who has sat out the last four games with groin and hand issues, also practiced on Thursday, but is not expected to return to game action until next week. Florida will complete its road trip Saturday in Buffalo. Markus Granlund Jersey . Canada Day is here and with it comes Free Agent Frenzy as the NHLs 30 teams storm out of the gate for signing season. Jake Virtanen Jersey . His head snapped back from the impact and hit the floor. The All-Star power forward was all right afterward, a relief for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Toronto Argonauts running back hurt his left ankle during the teams practice Friday afternoon at Rogers Centre. Loui Eriksson Jersey . As each game passes (each has played close with the exception of last night) it becomes clearer just how evenly matched these two teams are and how one mistake, or one bad inning, is likely to sway the result. Erik Gudbranson Jersey . The 10-horse field of 3-year-old pacers will leave the starting gate at approximately 10:14pm et. Co-owned and trained by David Menary, Hes Watching will be driven by Tim Tetrick and is the 5-1 fourth selection in the field.Minneapolis, MN ( - Teddy Bridgewater had a touchdown pass and Blair Walsh kicked a pair of field goals as the Minnesota Vikings closed out the season with a 13-9 victory over the Chicago Bears. Bridgewater was 17-of-25 for 209 yards with an interception for the Vikings (7-9), who snapped a two-game losing streak. Matt Asiata carried the ball 19 times for 91 yards. Great team win and great to finish the season on a good note, said Bridgewater. Learned a lot this year and overcame a ton of adversity. Great men with great character. Jay Cutler, back under center after being benched for last weeks game, was 23-of-36 for 172 yards for the Bears (5-11), who dropped their final five games of the season to finish last in the NFC North. I thought every week guys came to work, said Cutler. We had good game plans and the effort was always there, week in and week out. After missing the playoffs for a seventh time in the past eight years, Chicago might be looking to clean house as head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery are on the hot seat. I dont have to go into the reasons I expect to be back, said Trestman. I couldnt look at it any other way, or any other focus. My plan is to continue to finalize my notes now that the season is over so that if the opportunity rises I will be able to explain how we fix this thing. Minnesota scored on its first touch of the game, as a 13-play, 61-yard drive was finished off with a Walsh 37-yard field goal with 4:59 to play in the first quarter. Minnesota converted a pair of third downs on the drive. The Bears werent able to put points on the board until late in the first half, as Jay Feely kicked a 48-yard field goal with jusst 55 seconds showing on the clock.dddddddddddd. Alshon Jeffery caught a 19-yard pass on a 3rd-and-8 to keep the drive going. The Vikings started the second half with the ball, but Bridgewater was picked off by Kyle Fuller, leading to a 25-yard field goal from Feely less than two minutes in. Minnesota, though, came right back to take the lead, as Bridgewater went deep down the right side for Adam Thielen, who came down with the ball for a 44- yard score, the first of his career. A 44-yard field goal from Walsh with 11 1/2 minutes to play in the fourth made it a 13-6 game. Chicago got a big return from Marc Mariani on the ensuing kickoff, as he brought the ball 67 yards down to the Minnesota 35. However, the team moved just 18 yards and Feelys 35-yard field goal made it a four-point game with under nine minutes to play. Minnesota was able to eat over six minutes of the clock on its next touch and drove the ball down to the Chicago 3. Facing a 4th-and-1, though, Asiata was stuffed. Cutlers pass on fourth down was complete to Martellus Bennett, but he fell a yard short to turn the ball over on downs, and Bridgewater went into the victory formation. Game Notes Minnesota went 5-3 at home this season ... The Bears finished the season 3-5 on the road ... It was the first time Chicago finished last in the division since 2004 ... The Vikings missed the playoffs for a second straight season ... Matt Forte had 51 yards on 17 carries and eight catches for 23 yards for the Bears. He finished the season with 102 catches, the most ever in NFL history for a running back. Larry Centers held the previous record, with 101 catches for the Cardinals in 1995.
